Brand Brilliance: How to Craft Your Creative Business Identity (Part 2)

Your DIY Guide to Building an Authentic Brand That Grows With You

Let’s Get Practical

Welcome back!

In Part 1, we talked about what a brand really is (more than just a logo!) and why it's so important for a creative business.

Now, let’s get down to the fun stuff: the practical, actionable steps you can take today to build your brand from the ground up.

The Best Brand Is The One You Develop

Let me tell you from experience: the best way to develop your brand when you’re just starting out is to do it yourself. It really becomes a brand that is authentically you and genuinely represents your business. Of course, following sound business, design, and branding principles is wise, but I can assure you that creating a fantastically polished brand on your own is very achievable.

By doing it yourself, you learn valuable skills that will assist you in implementing and using your brand. This also gives you the flexibility to amend your brand as you grow and become more successful. I've seen plenty of creatives pay thousands of dollars to a brand expert only to find themselves stuck with an identity that doesn’t suit their evolving creative business.

Creatives who develop their own brand have a genuine connection and authenticity that just can't be replicated.

Step 1: Discover Your Brand's "Why"

🛑Before you design a logo or pick a color, you need to understand your core purpose. Your "why" is the foundation of everything. Grab a pen and paper and answer these questions:

  • What inspired you to start this creative business?

  • What problem are you solving for your customers? (e.g., bringing joy, providing unique gifts, offering sustainable alternatives).

  • What are the three words you want people to use when they describe your business? (e.g., "handmade," "charming," "eco-friendly").

Your answers will become the building blocks of your brand's mission and values.

Step 2: Define Your Ideal Customer

You can't be everything to everyone. The most successful brands have a clear picture of their ideal customer. Don't just think about age and gender. What are their hobbies? What are their values? What do they do for work?

Once you have a clear picture, you can create products and content that speak directly to them. This makes your marketing efforts far more effective.

Step 3: Find Your Visual & Verbal Voice

Now that you know your "why" and "who," you can now focus on creating your visual and verbal identity (voice).

Verbal Voice

How would your brand talk? Is it funny and casual, or sophisticated and elegant? Your voice should be consistent everywhere, from your social media captions to your product descriptions.

Visual Style

Look at your products. What colors and textures do you use most? Create a mood board on Pinterest to gather inspiration. This will help you select a consistent color palette, fonts, and photography style. Trial different aesthetic looks and chose one as your starting point. Aim for consistency as you progress.
